Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini by Giorgio Bassani

reflective sad slow-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? Character
  • Loveable characters? It's complicated
  • Diverse cast of characters? No

4.0

It took me 50 or 60 pages to get used to the author's style: his prose is complex and detailed, but surprisingly emotional. By the end I felt as if I was living in Ferrara myself, lazily wandering its streets and spending many sunlit days in the Finzi-Contini's enchanting garden.
Melancholy is definitely the primary feeling of this read and the unnamed protagonist immediately tells you what to expect from his tale, but I appreciate how the story was not about the Holocaust itself.
Definitely happy I picked up this book on a whim.
