RF Kuang is such a powerhouse and I have always loved reading her works, and this was no different. It felt like seeing someone hurtle themselves to their doom and I couldn’t look away from it. Writing Yellowface in first person really helped solidify June’s character and thoughts, and we get to understand just how vile she is.

The pacing of the whole novel was amazing and I think Kuang’s characterization has improved greatly. The only part that disappointed me or felt unsatisfactory was the ending, although the author chose that ending purposefully. It felt like June had learned nothing of her mistakes and would continue her own downward spiral to relevance (I would’ve preferred she crash and burn).

Athena and Candice are interesting characters and I found Athena’s range as a character really helped make this novel that much stronger. There are no truly ”good” people in this book, and I liked that.

Rory and June’s mom were also solid background characters that led us to understand June, as well as Geoff.

All in all this was a fun ride and I wish I had read this sooner.
