All books start with 5 stars and I’m a little soft on non-fictions.
I liked this book. I liked the story, the perspective, the questions it raises.
I also didn’t realize this was our VP until about halfway through.
Anyways, it loses 2 stars.
1 for it glossing over his time in school— explaining how he graduated in just a couple of years from Ohio State, getting into Yale without much effort, etc. He claims to not be special, but despite his background he was an exceptional student. I find this frustrating for those looking to this book as someone to relate to.
2 for the fact that he watered down his accent for the audiobook. why? a memoir about Appalachia needs to be read with an Appalachian twang. Made it feel like an imposter. I know that’s some of the discussion but… cmon. upsetting.
