this really exceeded my expectations. more depth than a lot of romances or mysteries. the romance especially felt new and unique, not really classifiable in the main romance tropes. it felt so grounded in both historical facts & the details of the fantasy world. the flashbacks were harrowing. it took maybe a long time to wrap up... but, sometimes i am looking at the percent bar thinking "ugh another 30 percent?" and this time i was like, yay another 30 percent. 

i love julian and ned a lot. i loved the gay club. i was a bit disappointed it was FTB but it worked and the romance was still extremely sweet. happy to see there's a sequel, will look for more from these authors.
