This book had a post apocalyptic feel without the fantasy that often accompanies many in this sub genre. It was very interesting to read a book in this setting from a pre-teen's point of view. If I ever found myself in the situation of Maddie at that age, I wouldn't have fared nearly so well.
This book wasn't a surface level plot-driven middle grade novel. It had depth and heart. I'd recommend trying Freeman's work.
