Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

3.0

It's odd to review and rate a memoir. Focusing on its writing style rather than its plot presents a challenge. Despite the considerable attention it garnered, I found myself struggling to connect with the narrative. There seemed to be a certain depth missing, prompting me to question whether my expectations had been raised too high by the surrounding buzz.

Throughout the book, I found it difficult to fully grasp the emotions Zauner aimed to convey. The writing often felt flat and, at times, even boring, leading me to skip over sections despite its relatively short length. Additionally, some of the stories shared within the memoir felt disconnected, failing to seamlessly align with the overarching narrative. Even though my review and rating paid more attention to how the book was written rather than its actual storyline, I still felt let down by the memoir's lack of connection.

Ultimately, "Crying in H Mart" may not resonate with everyone. Although it offers moments of vulnerability and introspection, its execution may leave some readers feeling distant. While the book may provide Zauner with a way to express herself, its effect on readers can differ. Taking this into account, I can only offer a modest rating of 3 out of 5 stars, reflecting my somewhat limited enjoyment of the memoir.
