Redshirts: A Novel with Three Codas by John Scalzi

4.0

This isn't Spin, Blindsight, Hyperion, or any of those other sci-fi masterpieces — nor does it intend to be, to be fair.

What it is, though, is something that’s better than it has any right to be.

Going into it, I feared it might lean too heavily into being meta. But I felt it struck a good balance, taking some things surprisingly seriously while approaching others with a justifiable sense of levity.

As I neared the end, I was ready to give it 3 out of 5 stars — a good book, enjoyable, but not... that good. Even now that I’ve finished it, I wouldn't say it is that good.

But, well, if you know, you know. Those last two or three chapters managed to raise it up a notch beyond what I had initially expected.

That final reveal? It put a smile on my face, to be perfectly honest.
