Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not)
by José Rizal
I'm not sure how to rate this book.
It is a very important piece of literature for the Philippines, I can see how. While visiting Manila I learned about the passion behind the author and the life he suffered. I respect his passion. While wearing a tee shirt of this book, native Filipinos complimented the shirt's message. I then had to read the book.
While reading, the book reminded me of Turgenev Fathers and Sons. Like many revolutionary works Touch Me Not explores the difference between young and old, tradition and new ideas as well as native and Spanish.
The importance of a book doesn't make it a good read. But the "story" was also good. When I would stop for the day I would look forward to what might happen next. The story had it all: love, loss, intrigue, mystery, and deception. But as this is a book that triggered a revolution it did not end well. This is not a story with a happy ending.
The book was written in Spanish and I listened to an English translation. It was very well written, very descriptive. The narrator did a great job, he made each character have a different voice. Some were really hard to listen to, but those were also the characters we weren't supposed to like.
It is worth reading if you like revolutionary literature.
