The Great Dating Fake-Off by Livy Hart

4.0

4/5🌶️, MF, CR, romcom, fake dating - but not each other, wedding shenanigans, found family, standalone, dual narration, Libby

Fake dating is not my favourite trope, but I think I’ve found the caveat that it works for me, when the main couple are fake dating OTHER people. I loved this take on a tried and true staple of romance. The fake dating others at an already crazy feuding families Italian wedding was a fun twist and added a lot of layers of humour to the story. The other thing I appreciated in this story was that the characters were refreshingly normal. We didn’t have a billionaire or a dominate MMC or an overly quirky or overly shy FMC. Both characters were middle of the road, average people, who worked through their issues, compromised when needed but also stood up for themselves when it was warranted. There was a large cast of characters though and some of those people were over the top but that added to the fun.

The sex scenes in this book were a bit unexpected but I throughly enjoyed them (probably because the FMC was a vocal and active participant in all activities and the MMC didn’t take over). There was also more exhibition and a well done subtle breeding kink that I did not see coming. My only negative was the frequent early 00’s pop culture references, despite me being old enough to get them all, it didn’t really fit the age of the characters (late 20’s/30). But, all-in-all, a very enjoyable romcom.
