Hard as It Gets by Laura Kaye
4.0
I will fully admit to the fact that the cover drew me to this one like a moth to a flame, and boy am I glad it did because Hard As It Gets was an excellent read from beginning to end!
Nick should not feel guilty for turning away a woman in need. Yet he does when he turns Becca away because of something she doesn’t even know about. Becca is the daughter of his dead, and extremely crooked, mentor and the last thing he wants to do is help her find her missing brother. When it becomes clear she is indeed in danger and that her brother was clearly kidnapped Nick can no longer deny her his help. As the situations become more dire the attraction ignites between them, but an omission of the truth may be all that’s needed to tear them apart.
Hard As It Gets has a darker feel then your average book because of Nick’s horrific past in the military and the subsequent fallout of his discharge. He’s jaded, cynical and angry at the shakedown he and his team mates received after an operation gone wrong. Stateside he’s been making his living doing whatever he has to and helping his brother run his tattoo shop. When Becca shows up he instantly recognizes her last name as the same name of his commanding officer who was seemingly responsible for the deaths of half his team. He turns down her request for help flat. I understood it, I did…even if I didn’t like it. So I was glad when his conscience got the best of him and he went in search of her. Nick was the perfect combination of possessive, stoic and scarred. He had limitations from his injuries in battle and yet he powered through them when needed.
Becca was the perfect woman for Nick. She’s capable and though she’s scared she remains in control and keeps her head during dire situations. I also liked how she played a role in protecting Nick when his ex-teammates show up to help. She has no problems going nose to nose with a bunch of men who would scare the shit out of normal people. She also played an integral part in keeping the men bandaged and patched up.
I enjoyed the constant flowing story line in this one. Not once was there a dull moment. It was chock full of edgy suspense and sexy encounters. As the start to a new series I thought it was extremely well done. It introduces many questions that will keep the overall story moving in the books to come while introducing readers to all the remaining team members. Hard As It Gets is black ops romance done exactly right! I can’t wait for book two!
I give Hard As It Gets by Laura Kaye 4.25 stars!
