The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman

3.0

While I don't have much of interest to add to the conversation, I will say that I find it comforting that in a world of witches, talking bears and personalized daemons, there is still Texas. Also, having listened to the audiobook (which is more like an old fashioned-radio drama than an audiobook) in which the voice actor for Lyra was quite amazing, I wondered if I would find it as charming if, without the benefit of the audio, one of the characters responded with just, "Yeah."

What I liked the most, actually, was the bonus interview at the end of the audiobook between Ruth Wilson (one of my favorites) and the author, Philip Pullman. I particularly appreciated his understanding that stories for children don't need to be dumbed down. It reminded me of my insistence, while raising my kids, that they only watch tv shows that were smart.
