The Book of 5 Mews by M.G. Rorai

3.0

A quick and meowellous read about our feline companions, their way of life and how it intervenes with ours.

This is a book concerning Catness, which is essentially the life of a feline. Catness is described as “water to the soul, yoga for the mind, and grooming for the world.” The 5 mews are the backbone of Catness and are there to guide and support you in life - whether you are a cat or not! These 5 mews are: paw, slink, roar, tail and clarity. Each one of them offers some sort of advice for how to achieve world domination by charming humans and learning to navigate the outside world successfully.

There are two main narrators/points of view in this book: the cat pov and the human pov. The human is called Harper and she is trying to find a sense of peace while starting out a new life in a new town. She ends up adopting a cat that she names Marble. Marble is our cat narrator and the one teaching the ways of Catness. We learn about a new mew from Marble and then see that mew in action through Harper’s diary.

This is not a plot driven story, but rather a whimsical approach to life and our understanding of it. It is mainly focused on how Harper and Marble are learning to live with each other and how this new relationship helps them move forward in life. It showcases slice-of-life type scenes in order to demonstrate the Catness principals. It is also very fast-paced and easy to read. Even though the advice seems to be aimed at cats, it can be useful for us all.

I quite enjoyed this short story as a cat lover myself, but I think anyone interested in understanding life and our approach to it would find this alluring. So, if you are in the mood for a light and fun read this summer, why not learn more about how to live like a cat.
(Also, the cover art is just the most adorable!)
