Elantris by Brandon Sanderson

4.0

4 stars.

Though the pacing dragged in the first half of the book, I loved the character work. Raoden shares many of the attributes (proactivity, enthusiasm, optimism, wit) we've grown accustomed to in Sanderson's protagonist archetypes, but Sarene was perhaps my favorite character in the book—just by a nose! She's assertive, sharp, strategic, critical, and I loved the chemistry between her and Raoden. They were great complements to one other. Karata also ranked up there for me. I thought her backstory was tragic and was so moved by the work she was doing.

I enjoy turning over philosophical themes, and Elantris definitely touted its share. I especially appreciated how making meaning and purpose in one's life not only can remove pain, but perhaps even create a sense of contentment or peace in living. As someone who gets depressed quite often, I know all too well how easy it is to slip into despair and stay there.

The world needs more Raodens to help give some of us a nudge.

All in all, really enjoyed this one.
