The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott
by Kelly O'Connor McNees
I really enjoyed this. Nice mix of history and romance, with a strong feminist twist. (It is not a spoiler to say she doesn't end up marrying her young man. We all know she remained a spinster.)
The premise of the novel is a good one: In order to write such a convincing relationship between Jo and Laurie, it seems likely that Louisa had had a youthful romance of her own.
The battle between convention and conviction is treated with appropriate complexity. The characters are all well drawn. And the struggle to BE an independent woman in the mid-19th century is also treated well.
Definitely worth a read.
