Her Best Friend's Birthmark by Keira Viresse

lighthearted medium-paced

4.5

Cairo has a birthmark that looked like the number three (3), but after a car accident, it turned into the number two (2). He survived that accident. Later, the COVID-19 pandemic emerged. Cairo developed feelings for Lyra, his best friend since college. He started missing Lyra due to the lockdown preventing them from seeing each other. Cairo was confused about whether he should confess his feelings to Lyra or let the chance slip away.

I appreciate the fast-paced yet beautifully crafted story. Keira Viresse effectively utilized her experience as a mathematics teacher to depict the struggles faced by educators during the pandemic, from conducting online classes to distributing modules, all while being vulnerable to contracting the virus. There were also many "kilig" moments that didn't sound corny to me; they all felt natural. Keira also unveiled Cairo's birthmark mystery naturally, without much conflict, making it an easy and light read. Her Best Friend's Birthmark was also set in El Nido, Palawan, offering readers a free tour experience through the narrative.

The story teaches the reader not to let opportunities slip away. If you like someone, have a crush, or love someone, say it, show it, make them feel it. Who knows? The feeling might be mutual. LOL. Because, in the end, we never know how long we'll live in this world.

Reading Keira Viresse's Her Best Friend's Birthmark was a breath of fresh air for me. A good book to start the year.
