Sweet Tooth by Ian McEwan
4.0

McEwan is far too clever for his own good.
The book is hard to get through and there's never a sense of becoming truly close to the characters, but there's always a sense of that in English novels.
The ending, however, is like Atonement, a conceit but one that the reader can't help but marvel at. It makes you (re)consider all that comes before. What is truth? What is a lie? It doesn't really matter because we make it all up as we go along and the only real goal is to be able to step into another person's shoes and see the world from their perspective. The aim for all, in McEwan's view, is just to acknowledge and give respect to another person's truth.
