Marked: Winter
by Michelle Fox, Gwen Knight
Marked by Gwen Knight and Michelle Fox is part of the blood courtesan series.
Amelia Winter is the baby sister and only daughter in a family of vampire slayers and has been taught that vampires are evil and prey on the innocent, and refuse to let her fight. But now her best friend's life is in danger as she struggles to pay a debt owed to a very ruthless vampire, and he has come to collect. In order to save her, she agrees to become a blood courtesan, selling herself to the highest bidder for a large payout, enough to clear the debt.
Enter Ethen Rune, an uncompromising vampire and bastard to boot and has his keen eye on Winter. She was always taught to never trust vampires but his money is the only thing that can save her friends life and protect her own. She never expected to fall for him or endanger her own life by doing so.
Marked has very different characters to the previous instalment of the blood courtesan series but I am getting more of a feel for the vampire society now that I am 2 books in.
I as glad to see the male protagonist described as not "devastatingly handsome" for a change and that his other attributes make him attractive to Winter. And winter was such a wonderfully strong, independent and capable character to read.
Even though this book is rather a short read, there is so much happening and going on during the story that it invert entertaining and I don't believe the story suffered in any way due to duration.
