See You Yesterday by Rachel Lynn Solomon

4.0

Thank you so much to Simon and Schuster for sending me an Advanced Readers Copy to read and review!

I definitely underestimated how much I would like this book. When Barret (the main character) started waking up over and over on the same day, I was hooked. I've always loved the movie Groundhog Day and Barret's situation was extremely similar.

Some things I loved about this book:
- The diversity!! In more forms than one. Barret is a show of great fat rep. I love how she embraced herself, and talked about being bigger without making it seem negative. Of course Barret had her insecurities, but her chubbiness is not a big theme or obstacle in the story which was a relief. And the cultural diversity is great. Both main characters are Jewish, and it is something that is celebrated throughout the book. Miles is a Japanese and Jewish icon. At one point in the book he says "I'm not half Japanese, half Jewish. I'm both-Japanese and Jewish." YES MILES EMBRACE BOTH SIDES OF YOUR HERITAGE WE LOVE TO SEE IT!!!
- The whole plotline of them figuring out how they got stuck in the loop. It was so fun reading about how the physics of the universe could play a part, or it could just be the universe playing a trick or telling them they have unfinished business (sorry Miles, I know I'm not supposed to personify the universe)
- Miles being a physics nerd, but also a softy. I loved seeing him slowly take down his walls when with Barret throughout the book
- Barret being a confident and outspoken queen. I was so relieved when I realized Barret is not your typical "chosen one" "not like other girls" female main character. She is confident, over the top, without a care of another persons perception of her. Even after everything Barret was put through in high school, it did not discourage her from being outwardly herself.

Here's why I took off one star:
- About halfway to three-quarters into the book it starts to drag. At this point we aren't finding anything out about the loop, and there's no action. This might be a personal preference, but reading solely about Barret and Miles' relationship in that part was not getting me hooked. I felt like I was waiting for something to happen.
- I also expected a bigger plot twist than what we got. To be fair I totally did not expect it to happen, but I was secretly hoping for some way larger explanation for everything. (Again, this is most likely a personal preference)
This is all to say, as soon as I got to the last few chapters there was a twist and I was back. The ending was sweet, and I can't wait for everyone to read it!
