Look, I was going to be nice. I was going to rate this a 3 stars because I thought it wasn't... terrible. The writing on a technical level is perfectly serviceable, and even nice sometimes. It's not my style but it's not bad.

But dang, this whole book is just so tedious. Have you ever seen a play you feel like you should know, but the actors are acting the parts weirdly, and they've cut out scenes that would actually give the setting and relationships and interpersonal conflicts any real meaning whatsoever? Like, if you just chopped the first act off of Romeo and Juliet? That's a little what reading this book feels like. I feel like, as long as this book is, there are fifty pages somewhere that explained why I give a crap about anything or anyone in this book. But for some reason those pages are not actually in the book anymore.

I haven't kept an eye on remaining page count so constantly in a long time. I threw up in my mouth every time Safi and Merik had a cutesy """"romantic""""" moment. I groaned when Aeduan and Merik had POV chapters. Most egregiously, I had no reason whatsoever to care about the sisterhood bond between Safi and Iseult. They weren't together enough for me to see why I SHOULD care, not when the author was obviously more interested in writing Safi/Merik and Iseult/Aeduan.

Anyway, Empress Vaness was the only good character in the book. I'd stay around for her if I didn't dread another 400 pages of Safi and Merik being dumb at each other.
