The Lonely Century: A Call to Reconnect
by Noreena Hertz
Our generation (myself very much included) is in a battle with itself to reconnect, particularly post-Covid. I picked this up, mainly to help guide and navigate my way through the waters of modern day connection and found many chapters interesting but not hugely helpful. The author makes many points, if anything too many, and those suggest measures to help us reconnect, but I felt like the book was missing real world guidance. It felt almost high level, governmental change, but rather didn’t maybe help me in the same way I thought it might. As a book of interest however, it’s extremely extensive and some particular chapters really do leave you questioning (even more) the current state of affairs - see our connection with AI (robots not just our phones), societal living situations, and the real impact of social media on our mental health (hint - it’s more harmful than good).
