Without Merit by Colleen Hoover

5.0

Prior to starting this book, I was actually reading something else. But because classes are about to start in a few days, I knew I needed a book that I can read instantly without having to struggle through the introduction.

I am actually not a fan of books revolving around depression because it makes me so sad for days on end. I started this book without knowing it tackles that and I’m glad I did.

This book taught me about how uncomfortable situations are necessary, no matter how sad and heartbreaking they make us feel. It’s with the social stigma that being sad is bad in a world full of opportunities. But as presented in the book and I’m sure in real life, not everyone is privileged enough to take such opportunities.

It’s with the ability of acclimating ourselves with uncomfortable topics that we learn to accept them. Just like Merit, she struggled to accept that she is depressed just because depression is depicted as something bad or something “abnormal”. With books like these and readers like us who should be open to these topics, we create a world more accepting, more understanding, more compassionate.

I can never forget now how important each of our perspectives are. Sometimes, we feel as if everyone is against us, but what we fail to acknowledge is that every single one of us have the capability to feel the same set of emotions.

This book is definitely another favorite. I may not be able to re-read it in the future, but I know that this book will be staple piece in my heart since it was able to teach me so much in a span of a few hours
