We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

5.0

“Poor strangers, they have so much to be afraid of.”

Haunting and unsettling, a god damn masterpiece.
This is my first Shirley Jackson book, yes I know I hate myself (but I did by another 5 the same day so it's fine, I'm making things right). The way she writes, you are immeditaley sucked in and intertwined with Merricat and Constance's lives in the old Blackwood House. I love that you only get snippets of information at random times and they often come in flashes, it feels like Shirley is saying 'are you paying attention?'.

Even though you now these characters have most likely done something horrible you can't help but feel attached to them and often feel protective of them against the horrible townspeople and the outsider cousin Charles.

This was the perfect Halloween read, I feel like I want to make this a new yearly Halloween tradition. The cold, windy, dark nights with a blanket and a massive brew set the perfect atmosphere for this novel. Can't wait to dive more into more of Shirley Jackson's work, I think I'm going to become obsessed.
