The Descent by Jeff Long
4.0
Yes, I definitely picked up on some racism in the book. Super shitty. However, there wasn't a huge amount of racist comments (that I noticed) so I kept reading. Definitely, racist subtext though. Super cool book otherwise. It slightly put me in mind of the Long Earth books. Just the idea of a whole other world closer than we think. I haven't really found any books that scare me but this one definitely creepy. Some of the jumping back and forth from character perspectives was a bit jarring but overall it added some dimensionality to how the events in the story were impacting people all over the world. I think the beginning of the book definitely was creepier/scarier than the later parts. I found myself feeling sad for both sides of the "war". I enjoyed the book overall but for the people that don't like it I can see where it falls short. I saw a lot of reviews talking about the science in it isn't accurate or real. My response: It's fiction, you need to have some suspension of disbelief.
