Matilda
by Roald Dahl
Although I have watched the movie a million times and make regular references to it in my own life (Matilda’s character traits and her love of teachers, NOT the parental abuse part), I have never read this classic!
I will say that I definitely loved the movie way more than the novel. Roald Dahl’s writing is a little graphic for a middle grade reader, using a lot of colorful language, nonchalantly mentioning suicide, and detailing physical abuse of children by caregivers. I couldn’t help but notice how misogynistic the male characters were and how complicit the female characters were created to be. I never liked Mr. Wormwood’s character in the movie version, however Roald Dahl wrote him to be ten times worse! He basically worships his son, Michael, and treats his wife as his slave. Matilda, and females like her are the bane of his existence. For these reasons, I kinda sorta hope we stop reading Matilda. Let’s stick to the movie, k?
