Runaways, Vol. 1: Pride and Joy by Brian K. Vaughan
3.0

Imagine if your parents were supervillains. That is pretty much the premise of graphic novel. A group of 6 teenagers discover that their parents have been lying to them and are part of an evil group known as the pride. Not only that, but the young people also discover that they may have a few tricks up their own sleeves as well as some superhuman abilities of their own.
I like the graphic novel format and it definitely adds to the appeal of this story. I feel like young people also like the ease with which a graphic novel reads and the ability to scan the page as opposed to the classic prose format. I feel like this book is great for any young adult 13 and up because the format is easy to pick up and the storyline is basic enough that any young person can get into it. Plus its geared toward an age where its hard to be a teen and having your parents be supervillains just makes sense. There are also lot of pop culture references that young people will enjoy. It is a quick read and entertaining. The ending leaves you wanting more but doesn't have one of those devastating cliffhanger moments. All in all a fun read.
