Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison

4.25

I gotta be honest—I stumbled across this series because I heard the audiobook narrator doing another series and I loved her so much that I went looking for some of her other stuff. And, though this isn’t typically a genre I’d get into, I was pleasantly surprised by the first book in the Hollows series—so much so that I’m going to keep going with the next one.

The story itself is decent in this novel, but the world-building and characters are spectacular. The author seamlessly integrates a myriad of fantasy creatures (witches, demons, vampires, pixies, leprechauns, etc.) as the plot unfolds, giving brief descriptions of how they’re defined in this world without distracting from the narrative.

The plucky yet vulnerable main character is a witch named Rachel Morgan, and we’re introduced to the supporting cast through her eyes—including her primary companions: a fast-talking pixie named Janx, a dangerously seductive vampire named Ivy, and a well-studied human named Nick. Together, they help Rachel avoid the ire of the bounty hunting organization she abandoned in order to start her own practice.

One of the things I found most amazing about Kim Harrison’s writing is her ability to depict a whole world and so sharply defined a whole cast of characters through first person perspective. We only see what Rachel sees and yet somehow we’re able to see so much more. Bottom line: I’m intrigued…and I’m definitely adding the second novel to my list.
