The second book in this series picks up almost exactly where the first book leaves off. The first book ends with Jackaby getting a call to investigate something strange about a lady's cat, and this book kicks off with him and Abigail investigating how a lady's cat has turned into a fish. Then their friend Charlie, in a town about 100 miles away, alerts them to a strange murder connected with a dinosaur fossil excavation...and then there are sightings of a large scaled creature in the same valley...and signs point to there being some connection between all of this and the cat lady. So Jackaby and Abigail are off to investigate away from home. Meanwhile, something is not at all right with their resident ghost Jenny, and Abigail keeps spotting a strange pale man with an ominous look about him. Hopefully they can solve the mystery this time without anyone else losing their lives, but it's far from a sure thing.

I enjoyed this one more than the first, purely because I was less able to predict the outcome. And it set up the pale man as a sort of running adversary - they still don't know who he is or why he seems to be encouraging mayhem, and the book ends with a clear indication that they will encounter him again. These books are not earth-shattering, but they are a lot of fun - great for middle schoolers and teens who enjoy a good supernatural mystery!
