Flawed by Cecelia Ahern
3.0

2.5/5 stars. I received [b:Flawed|23438288|Flawed (Flawed, #1)|Cecelia Ahern|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1433842801s/23438288.jpg|43002885] in the April Dystopian Owl Crate box. Prior to that I heard absolutely nothing about it.

When I initially picked this up, I read the pages 2 and 3 multiple times because I was so bored I couldn't process the information being dumped on me. We're talking about granddad, then a perfect mother and then right at the end of the third paragraph there's Juniper. What? Why? Slow down.

The aspect of the book that sets this apart from other dysoptians like it (and there are many) is that people being are charged not only for criminal but moral acts. For criminal acts you face jail time. For moral acts, you are deemed Flawed. When you are found Flawed punishment is a little more intense than just jail time. The Guild is branding humans and requiring them to wear their moral transgressions out in the open for everyone to see a la [b:The Scarlet Letter|12296|The Scarlet Letter|Nathaniel Hawthorne|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1404810944s/12296.jpg|4925227]. These transgressions are broken down into five categories; bad decisions, lying, stealing from society, disloyalty to The Guild and stepping out of line.

So... like everyone... Right?

Celestine is the main character. She's said to be extremely smart and logical but there were often cases where I didn't find that to be true. (Honey, you really thought you were being invited to a party to make new friends? Please.) She's boring. Kind of annoying how for the first 100+ pages all we heard was "I follow rules. I have logic. Blah blah blah." She's an idiot and I hate how everyone frequently talks about how smart she is. The anger towards Juniper feels out of place with Celestine's character and seemed hastily added for conflict. I just do not like her.

At this point, I don't care what happen's to Celestine. She's nothing to me. I am interested enough in Carrick and where certain loyalties lie to continue this series.. potentially.
