Tita's Diary by Laura Esquivel

3.0

It's been 30 years since the publishing of Like Water For Chocolate, give or take some years, and this won't disappoint die hard fans of the original book. I wanted to read this so bad I read it in Spanish, as that was the only language available for quite some time when it first came out.

Essentially, this is a companion to Like Water For Chocolate. If you recall from the first book and the film, Tita kept a diary. Essentially, these are the diary words of Tita that Esparanza found after the farm burned down at the end of the first book. It pretty much gives us better insight into Tita's emotional state, and how she dealt with her many challenges loving Pedro, dealing with Mama Elena, her true feelings for John, and her tumultuous relationship with Rosara, and her love of Gertrudis. Same story, just in Tita's words.

The only reason why I gave it three stars is because of its presentation. I get the journal idea, but reading this in Tita's handwriting on that fancy paper background was hard on the eyes. It should have been typed text with the actual diary pages released separately as a collector's item.
