I read this because it’s my daughter’s favorite book. She’s read it at least 3 times that I’ve counted, and she’s very serious about the fandom around it. I’d considered reading it before, but think I only finished the first chapter before putting it down. Then I was poking around on Hoopla, trying to use my end of the month check-outs, when I realized that they had Darkstalker on audiobook, so I grabbed it.
I have to say that the narration was very good and engaging enough that I at least got to chapter 2. My daughter said that she did not like Fathom’s voice and that it was not at all how she had imagined it, but for me, I had done no imagining, so I thought it was fine (and if you ask me suited Fathom’s character).
I had vaguely held out a tiny hope that this is one of those books that would be passably entertaining for an adult, and it was not. Sure, I could try to shuck 30 years of experience and try to meet it on its level, but I was not successful on that front, so I was stuck evaluating it as an adult reading a book intended for children. I will say that I know the exact appeal for my daughter – she loves the characters and is really engaged with how bloody-minded they are (which is mild compared to say GoT, but dark enough if you’re 11).
It was probably worth it to be able to discuss my kid’s favorite book with her in detail, but I did point out that it was basically Vader’s arc in the Star Wars prequels, and she made a face at me. 3 stars for me, 5 stars for her, so 4 stars average.
