And the Ocean Was Our Sky by Patrick Ness
5.0

I went into this book expecting to like it, so I do have to take into account my own bias in how much I enjoyed it. That being said, this book met all expectations I had of it. Seeing as I haven't read Moby Dick I was curious if my experience would be hindered in any way, but now that I've finished it and reread the most striking chapters I can gladly say that that was not the case. If anything, I think the best endorsement I can give this book is that is made me interested in reading Moby Dick.

Ness' style is easy to sink into--this is the first book in over a year I've been able to finish, much less with only a physical copy. And the Ocean was Our Sky is stuffed full of imagery that's going to be lingering with me for a long time, and these are only enhanced by Cai's stunning illustrations.

Ness delivers a thought-provoking story of loss, hatred, revenge, and the barriers of understanding we must consciously overcome. It's a short and easy read, but it packs plenty of wonderful character work and gut-punch lines into its small page count.
