The Sorrows of an American by Siri Hustvedt

5.0

i'm so sorry that this doesn't get a full review. it isn't because i didn't love it. it's because i loved it too much. siri hustvedt is such a subtle writer. she's wonderful at piecing together a character, little bits of information at a time, and at unraveling them. this seemed like such a personal piece for her, since the excerpts about the war are from her family, fit into the story (and a large part of the driving force of the story). also, by sheer coincidence, i read this right after the auster piece. what a wonderful marriage of minds.
