Foundation and Empire by Isaac Asimov
4.5

While the original 'Foundation' was a collection of short stories detailing the formation and early days of the eponymous galactic power, 'Foundation and Empire' is split into two focused parts that tell of its highest highs and lowest lows.

'The General' was the first, and in my opinion, the weakest of these two parts - the story of a great general born too late in a dying Empire and his conflicts with both his enemies and those he serves.

'The Mule' on the other hand was an excellent story of mounting terror as a force enigmatic and brutal in nature tears its way across the Galaxy, threatening to destroy all in its path. The mystery of The Mule is gripping and ends in both a fantastic reveal and a cliffhanger that leads in nicely to the final novel in the original 'Foundation' trilogy.
