The Last Magician
by Lisa Maxwell
Uff, how to begin? This book was a bumpy yet amazing roller coaster ride, switching from two to five stars and everything in between.
The beginning was interesting, intriguing even. But the middle part dragged on and on. Since we knew that there was gonna be a heist, I just wanted it to happen already! Around page 400 I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue the series but those last pages were wild and I'll continue at some point no doubt, since I finished the last 100 pages in one sitting.
I think what bothered me the most was the way Harte and Esta met. It felt so out of place and way too fanfictiony. Because of that I didn't buy their difficult relationship until the end and even now I'm not yet fully convinced.
But I liked Harte and Esta, as their alone characters. They were both really interesting.
Harte's shows were exciting and I enjoyed the glimpses we got into his backstory.
Esta I liked as a protagonist too but I think the tension with her being in the past could've been much more suspenseful if we would've gotten to see more of Esta's present. But since we got to see so little from the people involved in her present life I didn't really care for them.
The side characters were interesting too but if Lisa Maxwell would've given them more time or more chapters on their own so we would've gotten to know them more and therefore feel more for them wouldn't that have been amazing? For example Jianyu? He's so interesting and I would've loved to follow him around when he's completing one of Dolph's tasks.
The magic system could use some more polish and explanation although my heart always started beating faster when Esta pulled time slower.
And at last: I guessed almost all of the plot twists but was still gasping when I saw them unfold because they were planned carefully and added so much more to the story.
All in all, a good book which I would recommend even if it has some flaws.
