The Barren Grounds
by David A. Robertson
This one is a strong 3.5 stars.
An interesting indigenous fantasy with elements of legends and underlying themes of conservationism. The plot was interesting and the world building had enough fantasy vs. realism to make it intriguing all the way through.
If there was one thing I would change it would be to add more character-building, more backstory. The characters were intriguing enough that I wanted to know more and I'm thinking (and hoping) that since this is book 1 we will get that pay off in future sequels.
