The Aeronaut's Windlass by Jim Butcher

5.0

I honestly picked this book up on a whim. I've never read a Jim Butcher novel but I'm a incredibly happy I did.

The world he has created is awesome. I loved the Spires and the ships that Butcher created. I admit it took a few chapters to get a handle on the world and how the characters operate within it, but that's only natural. I loved the adherence to etiquette that added a humorous touch in many situations. The weaponry and use of crystals as power was intriguing.

The characters were rich and many of them quite humorous. Rowl, the cat, was my favorite character to read. I imagine his dialogue and inner monologue to be exactly how an everyday cat would speak/think. He had me chuckling and smiling and wanting to hug my own cat (although she did not share the sentiment). I loved the quirkiness and idiosyncrasies Jim Butcher gave to Master Ferus and Folly. Master Ferus is clearly brilliant in his own way, but his personal battle with doorknobs added lightness to heavy situations.

I highly recommend this novel and greatly anticipate the next installment.
