Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner
challenging
dark
sad
medium-paced
4.0
This is a really heavy read and probably not one for people who have recently experienced a bereavement. Since there's no blurb on the paperback (and I was reading between my pb and the audio), I assumed the book might be about Michelle Zauner's life as well as the passing of her mother. But 90% of it was about her mother's illness and her subsequent death, making this a sad and, at times, harrowing read. It's a powerful and important book, but I found it hard going because it was so devastating. We get a clear insight into the complicated relationship Michelle had with her mother and this book does a good job of illustrating how parent-child relationships can be at once so deeply loving, and also very tough.
Graphic: Cancer, Grief, and Terminal illness
Moderate: Racism
Minor: Emotional abuse
