Take the Fall by Marquita Valentine
3.0

I found this book similar to Abbi Glines YA books. Young ones living in the wrong part of town, living among gangs, drugs and illegal car races. Rowan is the typical teenager girl, sexy and sassy. She and her brother Jace are orphans, and Jace looks after Rowan very zealously, never letting her get into trouble, watching out for boys with bad intentions, working for her so she can go to college. He works at Seth's grandmother car repair shop. One night, after an illegal car race, a fight ensues between Jace and the race loser, a shot is fired and the police arrive. Rowan wanted to take the fall so her brother wouldn't get in trouble again, but Seth decides to take the fall instead. Jace is sentenced for 7 years, Seth serves 9 months and then forced to join the Marines. He ends up so enraged by this outcome that he forbids Rowan to come see him in jail, asking her instead to take care of his grandmother. Seven hears later, he comes back for his grandmother's funeral and to make right with Rowan. Needless to say Rowan is not having any. She had to grow up alone, outcast in their school, with Piper as her only friend. Now she's the one who holds grudge.

This was a good plot, but for some reason, the book falls short of making a strong impression and involving my feelings. I felt that Seth was a jerk, blaming Rowan for his incarceration when it was his decision to take the fall. He was unfair to Rowan, then he comes back seven years later, very cocky and assured, planning to get back with Rowan just like that. I had problems with Rowan because she would bitch at Seth, then melt when he kissed her. The one I liked was Piper, Rowan's best friend. I'm really looking forward to that story.
