A couple of years ago I read Winston Churchill's [b:The Second World War |22501|The Origins of the Second World War|A.J.P. Taylor|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1223649344s/22501.jpg|143854] which is an excellent perspective on the lead up to the WWII and what happened during the war (albeit from one perspective). Winston Churchill stops at 1945 and this is where Andrew Marr takes over. The style is slightly different, but it is still a very readable perspective of what has made the Britain we see today. The style is easy to read and informative with flashes of wit that ensure it is never dry or dull.
Whilst this is very much about the changes to Britain over this period, it is very much centred around the changing political scene over this time. One interesting factor is that it is not clear (or was not to me) which way Andrew Marr votes - all parties seem to get objective assessments of their successes and failures and the context of them.
I would have liked to give 4.5 stars, but Goodreads does not allow this. Why? Well the book is perhaps too long and particularly the last section dealing with most recent events has lost the succinctness of the earlier sections, perhaps because this was when Andrew was most heavily involved as a journalist. But still some fascinating perspectives are played out.
A recommended read if you want to understand how Britain has become what it has.
