Private Property by Skye Warren

5.0

Private Property is the story of Beau Rochester and Jane Mendoza and his six-year-old niece Paige, whom the latter is to become a nanny to.

Warning: This is Book One of the Rochester trilogy and ends on a cliff-hanger.

Synopsis:
Beau is an unfeeling guardian to orphaned Paige, and Jane is correct in her assessment when she comes to know what the former thinks of his own niece. But there is a soft heart underneath that hard demeanour. And when a storm blows through The Coach House, will this grieving and hurting trio transform into a cosy family of three?

Review:
Ever since I read the Diamond trilogy, I've become an ardent admirer of [a:Skye Warren|5339130|Skye Warren|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1580833030p2/5339130.jpg]'s writing. And I was eagerly waiting for Private Property after reading the excerpt in the author's newsletter.

On Eben Cape lives the Rochesters in The Coach House. It may be a house for the Rochesters, but it's nothing short of a haunted mansion for nineteen-year-old Jane Mendoza. A girl who has never been outside of Harris County, Texas, suddenly finds herself at the top of a mountain.
“I’ll be in my study if you need me.” He pauses with a hard look. “Don’t need me.”

But you know how it goes, Jane does need Beau and when that need arises, it's hilarious to read their interactions. The story is oh so slow burn and sexy. The dialogues, the hurt, the emotions, the sadness, the magic of it all made this a wonderful read.
Grief does not care whether you’re rich or poor.

But along with the grief, there is rib-tickling humour in this book, and it is contagious. Even though the pain and anguish make you weep. It's a fine balance, really. Paige is a sweetheart but a hurting kid and an angry uncle (not at her, at the world) are an explosive combination, especially with an innocent (or should I say, naive) nanny thrown in between.
Maybe it’s the water banging against the rocks that’s his music. Something elemental.

But of course, then there comes a wedge between them. There are nasty parties and cute drunkenness, and class divide and jealousy. And when Beau thought Jane was adorable, all I could think of was how adorable Warren's writing is. And how thoughtful. Her writing pulls at your heartstrings and really makes you think about all the things said and left unsaid.

P.S. There's this fisherman's song that the author penned for one of the characters. And I would love it if Skye Warren would share the entire song. Sigh! It's just that it's so beautiful and melancholic…

Thank you to Valentine PR for an e-ARC of the book.
