Touch of Frost by Jennifer Estep
2.0

Gwen attends Mythos Academy, a school for descendants of mythical races such as the Valkyries and Spartans. All is not well at Mythos, however, and when a popular mean girl turns up dead and a dangerous artifact goes missing, Gwen decides she has to solve what's going on before the world literally falls apart.

I've tried to read Estep's adult fiction and never really got into the books. I figured I'd give her YA series a try and hopefully find a better fit. Unfortunately I didn't connect with the characters at all. The premise of Mythos had me rolling my eyes because the descedant races feel so random and thrown together. The world building just wasn't there for me and after limping along through a quarter of the book I couldn't bring myself to keep reading. As with several other authors, I also felt like this novel was written down to its audience in comparison to Estep's adult series - not in the subject matter necessarily, but in the writing style. It's hard to put my finger on why, but one big annoyance was the feeling that characters were quirky just for the sake of being quirky. Nothing really clicked.

This book was not for me but I can see others really enjoying it. I think fans of the Blue Bloods series might enjoy this one as well.
