Invincible by Troy Denning
A riveting, really great book—despite a few personal qualms...
(Now, be warned - the rest of this review is packed with spoilers!)
It makes me so sad that Jacen had to die—I admit I was really holding out hope for his redemption. Jacen's end was the only thing I was really unsure of coming into this series. Nonetheless, I did see his ultimate demise coming and figured it would be inevitable, and there were so many points in earlier books when I wanted to strangle him that his death felt justified in spite of my hopes. (That's good character development, right there.) I am kind of glad Jacen went out fighting, trying to do at least some tiny act of good. The whole book was a stark contrast of his sweet teenage innocence and his fall to the Dark Side.
I was pretty impressed with Jaina. Her orneriness has, throughout the span of Star wars novels, driven me crazy at times, but that she had the strength to go through with hunting down and killing her twin brother says a lot. She makes a pretty awesome heroine. (And—I have to just say—I'm so glad she finally decided she likes Jag over Zekk! Jag is so much cooler.)
One plot twists I was not overfond of was the very very end, where Allana shows up as "Amelia", Han and Leia's adoptive daughter. I am, of course, glad that she didn't die, but the setup seemed so...I don't know...cliché? It just rubbed me wrong.
Overall, though, this was a rather amazing book, and I would highly recommend the entire Legacy of the Force series to any Star Wars fans out there, or sci-fi adventure readers in general. Deep stuff. Worth your time!
