Ask Me by Bernard Waber

4.0

All children should be blessed with a father like this. I was nervous about sharing the book with children. What if they don't have a father with this amount of time? Patience? Joy in companionship? Appreciation of nature? Would the book make a child feel sad if they didn't get this level of attention from their Dad? I don't have the answer to that. So, I will assume instead, that this gorgeous model of parenting can only be an uplifting example to familes who read the book together.

I used this book in a storytime one time, but 'Ask Me' is really meant to be a bedtime book. Children loved the illustrations and delighted in pointing out details in the illustrations. I appreciated how the author was showing ESL students phrases they don't encounter in everyday conversation. Do you prefer geese 'in the sky?' or 'in the water?' The whole book has a soothing, slow-paced rhythm perfect for bedtime, not storytime. This book is a vision of a love-filled, intellectually-curious childhood: safe, and secure.
