Lisa is an impeccable human being who had a way with words off the page as well. Her thought process, experience, an essence translates beautifully into written word. As an admirer, I wanted to read it. As someone who does reparations work, I wanted to make sure I read it so deeply that I could unpack it with/for clients. I always aim to keep away from the religious lens (not my lane), and I am more than happy to defer to people like Lisa for that approach with regard to reparations. The way she challenges others is truly remarkable, and inherently genuine.
In my conversation with Lisa just weeks ago, we found so much overlap in our genealogy journeys and even the locations of ancestors. Though I frequently err on the side of e-books and audiobooks to save physical space in my home, this is one book where I knew I would need a physical copy. I have so many highlights and various notes in the margins. It will be in my personal library for years to come; while I like to think I’d be willing to let people borrow it…I can’t say I’ll ever be able to part with it. People will just have to buy/borrow another copy!
