Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

I get that this is considered a classic with mass appeal. But whilst I found some aspects "charming" I found myself pretty disgusted with the heavy hierarchy. Women as objects with a narrow range of things that might distinguish them (handsomeness or playing an instrument or not speaking out of turn). Men as procurers of said women. Veneration of the institution of marriage. The aim of marrying into wealth. Above all else decorum and etiquette rule all.

I can see why centrists get so giddy about this. But it certainly is deeply concerning. I do not hark back to thinking this sort of thing is aspirational and I worry that there are many that do. Said like a working class woman trying to make her way in academia.

I listened to this on Audible. Narrated by Rosamund Pike and she was very good. I won't be keeping Audible after the free trial. Support your local library! ✊
