The Strangers
by Katherena Vermette
The Strangers is a well done generational story of four Métis/Michif women from the Stranger family. Each story was very different and you never got to see any clear connections of why what happened in one generation affected another. Yet, at the same time you knew they were connected.
There is a lot of trauma in the book, yet it never focused on the actual traumatic events. It was really interesting in this way, as I think we often always want those events in reading drawn out to make sense of the why. I assume the author wanted more focus on the repercussions, which was impactful.
The only real challenge I had to the book was that there are a lot of unanswered questions. I read The Break years ago, but can't remember it really and only when thinking more about the book realized they are connected through Phoenix. I want to go back now and reread that to get more of her story. And I definitely will look out for more from Katherena Vermette as it seems there was a start to a few more stories laid in this one, starting with her next book she mentioned coming out as early as this fall.
