Three Women by Lisa Taddeo

emotional reflective sad medium-paced

3.5

Three Women. Three stories. Three sexual experiences. Lisa Taddeo’s collection of these women’s stories focuses on Lina, whose marriage has fizzled reconnects with an old flame, Maggie, who as a 17 year old had a physical relationship with her older teacher, and Sloane restaurant owner whose husband watches her have relations with other people. Based on years of research and interviews, Taddeo documents these women’s desires, needs and infatuation.

I will start this review off with letting you know that it is undeniable that Taddeo has an immersive talent for writing. The way she wove these 3 accounts was done very well. My frustration with this book lies with the marketing and the authors choice to solely focus on white American women’s experiences.

The marketing of this book made me expect a look into a celebration of women’s sexuality along with the incredible difficulties women have to express their desires and the horrific experiences women have been through. Sexual assault is prevalent and while this is incredibly important it also saddens me that it was the only focus when we are led to believe we’d also witness the beauty of women’s desire and intimacy.

Most importantly, there were no experiences of women of colour. Out of 3 stories marginalized women were once again left out of the narrative.

In my opinion (I was also hoping) this would have been an excellent chance to portray 3 stories from 3 different women with different stories from 3 different cultures and backgrounds. Overall, this was just a 3✨ from me.
