Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult

3.0

(3.5) I appreciate Picoult's attempt to get a conversation started but dislike how much of the story revolves around self-reflection expressed through too many a metaphor. Although an overt act of prejudice initiates the conflict, Picoult appropriately makes systemic and institutional racism the crux of the narrative. At times, the voices of the different characters seem a bit stereotyped, but I applaud her attempts to bring race to the forefront. And finally, I think she made a misstep by writing in a massive twist at the end, detracting from the commonplace casualness of racism in American minds and society.
