This is both one of the best and worst things I have ever read.
I expected this to be good. I remember everyone talking about it a couple of months ago when it came out and as usual I am way behind everyone else but I finished this a few days ago and I am still thinking about it now.
This is a gripping book, absolutely thrilling, brilliant, terrible and heart-breaking.
It is horrific and so descriptive in it's horror that you will find yourself cringing. I mean my face was literally either scrunched up in a grimace or jaw-dropped in shock. There was no in between!
The story follows a woman known as "Jane" even though that is not her name who travelled to the UK from Vietnam for a better life and ended up imprisoned in a house by a man called Lenn and caught up in a terrible experience of human trafficking and modern day slavery.
Lenn expects Jane to keep his house, do his cooking and warm his bed. Basically everything that he considers to be a wife's duty.
He expects her to do everything the way his mother used to do it and refers to his mother often. "It was good enough for her, it's good enough for you".
Lenn is cruel, mentally and physically abusive and manipulative.
He is utterly terrifying and the fear this woman feels every single day in his presence can be felt through the pages.
Her experience is harrowing and the descriptions are so raw, emotional and full-on that it was almost like I was feeling her pain at some points.
This was a very, very tough read. Anyone considering reading this needs to be prepared for the fact that this is a very disturbing story but one that is absolutely thrilling, expertly written and one you will be thinking about long after finishing.
