Eleven Kinds of Loneliness
by Richard Yates
My first Yates. I feel like he couldn’t hit his stride with these short stories, or once he started to hit his stride the story would end. I liked one or two of the short stories…God, the women in these stories were hated. I guess that’s one thing you can take away from Yates’ portrayal of the 50s?
Yates, where were the windows in the stories? Where does the light come in?
“
One thing is true though, and it’s just not occurred to me, is that very often in trying to hit the right wording for some touchy personal letter, I’ve thought of: ‘I didn’t have time to write you short letter today, so I had to write you a long one instead.’
